Norse operated CCTV improving crime detection
September 2011

New CCTV cameras operated by Waveney Norse on behalf of Waveney District Council are attracting considerable media coverage as they help local police to improve crime detection in Lowestoft.
The local press recently reported that since the introduction of new cameras and operating room screens, the number of positive reviews, that is where images have been recorded that could be used in court, has increased from around 30% to over 50%.
The latest figures from Waveney Norse show this level is being maintained, with a 54pc success rate in August when officers reviewed footage on 62 occasions giving 34 positive results.
The incidents with which CCTV operators assisted the police included public order offences, shop thefts, burglaries, criminal damage, driving offences, possession of offensive weapons and a case of child neglect.
“The clarity of the images is helping us in a variety of situations, allowing officers to gather clear evidence of offences and to use footage to prove, or disprove, accounts given by victims, witnesses and offenders,” commented Temporary Inspector Penny Jones, the officer overseeing Lowestoft’s safer neighbourhood teams.
Waveney Norse General Manager, Andy Wilson-Sutter reports that further upgrades and enhancements are planned over the coming months. These include additional screens in the control room to give operators a wider view from cameras, and the provision of additional cameras across the town and the neighbouring Oulton Broad area. |
